Syamsuddin Shafie, aged 54, lost his left hand and three fingers of his right hand after he was attacked in front of a coffeeshop in Kampung Belat, Kubur Panjang, on Sunday 8pm. The timber factory supervisor was also injured on his shoulder and received 20 stitches.
The victim was having a drink when a man in his 30s gestured to him. The victim's wife, Siti Fatimah Kadir, aged 53, and the coffeeshop owner were present at the coffeeshop.
When Syamsuddin approached him, he attacked him with a 60cm long sword. The suspect intended to give chase when Syamsuddin ran but backed off upon seeing the two at the coffeeshop.
Syamsuddin was brought to the Alor Star Hospital where he was warded.
Siti said the suspect was married to Syamsuddin’s cousin previously but said she did not know the cause of the attack. She also claimed that RM5,000 was missing from Syamsuddin's pocket, which was meant to pay for a car loan.
