Businesswoman Cheated of RM90,000 by Fake Datuk

25 February 2007
Johor Baru

A 45-year-old businesswoman was offered a Mercedes Benz E-Class 2004 car and club membership from a 40-year-old man posing as a Datuk. She was conned of RM90,000 in total.

The victim, from Pengerang, Kota Tinggi, went to the suspect's house on 16 January 2007 after she was told by the suspect that the discounted car was from an auction by the Customs Department. She was also briefed on the privileges of the exclusive club membership which might bring her more business opportunities.

The businesswoman deposited RM15,000 and RM60,000 into the suspect's bank account as the suspect told her that the car and club membership would be delivered to her within ten days from the date of her payments.

A few days later, the suspect told her that the car was not in a good condition and offered her a 2006 model for an additional RM15,000, which she paid promptly.

The suspect was arrested at his house at Taman Perling on Friday night and will be remanded for one week to aid investigations. The case is classified under Section 420 of the Penal Code for cheating.
