Eleven Illegal Immigrants Caught in One Car

24 February 2007
Kuala Lumpur

11 Myanmar illegal immigrants were packed into a Proton Satria in a 450km journey from Kangar. Two policemen at the junction of Jalan Tun Perak and Jalan Raja Laut at 9:40am tried to stop the suspicious car as the windows were tinted and the car was driven erratically.

The car slowed down then sped away as the policemen approached it. The policemen, including more in seven other patrol cars, joined in a high speed chase that started at Jalan Tun Perak. Ten minutes later, the driver lost control of the car and rammed into a gate of an abandoned building along Jalan Ipoh Kecil at Sentul.

The driver, a grocery shop assistant and security guard from Perlis, tried to run away on foot but was caught by a policeman.

The illegals, aged between 14 and 42, did not have travel documents with them. They have been remanded at the Immigration Department.

The car had a false registration number plate and a false road tax disc.

The driver faces up to five years' jail, six strokes of the cane, and a fine between RM10,000 and RM50,000 for each immigrant that he held.
