Marine patrol police managed to stop a barter trade boat at the Sulu Sea near Pulau Berhala from escaping to international waters at 11am last Saturday. It was believed to be smuggling 12,000 litres of diesel in 60 drums.
The boatman and 14 crew members have been detained for investigations.
The men had attempted to enter Sabah posing as barter traders but had covered the drums in the cargo hold with bags of sugar, rice and flour.
