Clerk Lost RM750 in SMS Scam

10 March 2007
Kuala Lumpur

A 39-year-old clerk, who only wanted to be known as Yoong, has fallen prey to another SMS scam on 28 February 2007. She had received a message informing her that she won a RM15,000 cash prize and RM250 talk time credit in a contest.

When she called a number to claim her prize, a man who identified himself as "Abdul Rahman" asked for her identity card and bank account numbers in order to transfer the money to her. She then had to change her ATM and transaction authorisation PIN and inform the man of the new PIN.

The victim was told that she would have the money in her account in 25 minutes, but when she checked again she discovered that RM750 had been withdrawn.

Yoong made a complaint at the MCA Public Services and Complaints Department yesterday.
