Taxi Driver Father Held Over Death of 5-year-old Son

31 December 2007
Johor Baru

A 40-year-old taxi driver has been held by the police for the alleged murder of his 5-year-old son. The youngest of three siblings, the boy died at the Sultanah Aminah Hospital yesterday at 3am, possibly a victim of child abuse.

It is believed that the father had attempted to discipline the boy by using a cane at their home in Taman Kempas Baru. The boy tried to run from his father and fell and hit his head. Suspecting nothing was amiss, they went to bed later.

The boy's father and 10-year-old sister had brought him to the hospital, claiming that he was vomiting non-stop. The doctor found multiple injuries on the boy's body, suggesting that he was physically abused. The two were held at the Skudai police station while the 34-year-old mother was picked up later for questioning. She and the daughter were later released.

Police have classified the case under Section 302 of the Penal Code for murder and a post-mortem shall be conducted.
