Sharlinie Missing: 16-year-old Arrested for Extortion

16 January 2008
Petaling Jaya

Just after the arrest of an Indonesian maid for sending false short messages via her mobile phone, police have arrested a 16-year-old schoolboy for extortion of RM5,000 from Sharlinie Mohd Nashar's parents in exchange for her return. Sharlinie has been missing from a playground near her home in Taman Medan since last Wednesday. He was remanded from his house yesterday at 6:30am.

Over several days until Sunday, the boy had been calling the parents several times for the ransom, as well as demanding that they top-up his mobile phone credit with RM200.

Sharlinie's parents made a police report on the boy, who has been remanded at the Petaling Jaya district police headquarters until Friday. He is being investigated for any involvement in the abduction and for criminal intimidation under the Penal Code and Multimedia Act.
