Mamak Gang Leader Busted

25 January 2008
Ipoh

Police have arrested four suspects aged between 19 and 50 years, believed to be members of the Mamak Gang, at the 297 kilometre mark of the North-South Expressway, near Gopeng, on 18 January 2008 at 7pm.

They found RM40,936 cash, 13 mobile phones, 2 fake police authority cards, 13 fake road tax stickers, a fake identity card, a Customs Department security card, a Malaysian Airlines security card and pepper spray in the Toyota Wish vehicle that was stopped. It is believed that the cash was from a robbery case in Selangor a few days ago and the vehicle was reported stolen from Taiping last year.

Two suspects were under restricted residence in Negri Sembilan and Malacca while another was involved in a police shoot-out in Penang last year. With their arrests, including the mastermind, police believe that at least 9 cases in Perak, Selangor and Penang would have been solved.

The Mamak Gang is well-known for hijacking luxurious vehicles and robbing people who had just withdrawn money from banks. About 150 robberies, including cargo hijackings and warehouse break-ins, are attributed to them. Last year, the gang tried to steal a Porsche 911 Targa 4 from the Auto City showroom in Seberang Jaya and later at the Bukit Mertajam police headquarters.

Altantuya Murder Trial: Call Data Header Altered

25 January 2008
Shah Alam

32-year-old Haizal Hambalia, a technical specialist from Celcom, took to the stand on the 80th day of the murder trial of Altantuya Shaariibuu, admitting that he had made changes to data in a document presented to court previously.

The document, which Haizal prepared, detailed accused Chief Inspector Azilah Hadri's mobile phone calls. Haizal noticed that the structure and arrangement of the column for the location area code (LAC) were not in accordance with the convention adopted by Celcom, for transactions made between 17 and 21 October 2006.

Haizal explained that although the LAC was inaccurate, the cell IDs of transmission stations do not change and are unique. The location of every transmission station corresponding to every phone transaction remains unchanged, thus the locations at which the calls were allegedly made would not be changed.

Haizal said his colleague Mohd Firdaous Mohd Omar from the special project and investigation department had requested that a "location mapping" on Azilah's SIM card be prepared. Haizal sent the "location mapping" to Mohd Firdaous on 13 June 2007.

Mohd Firdaous then prepared Azilah's phone detail records which showed that Azilah's phone was used in the Puncak Alam area on the night of Altantuya's murder.

On 16 June 2007, investigating officers ASP Tonny Lunggan and DSP Gan Tack Guan, and two other officers, took Haizal to several areas of Bukit Damansara, Bangsar, Bukit Aman, Kota Damansara, Subang and Puncak Alam. Using a drive measurement tool which showed the transmitting station of any area, Haizal identified the various transmission stations which would be used by a mobile phone user.

The trial continues next Wednesday.

Altantuya Murder Trial: Mobile Location Traceable

22 January 2008
Shah Alam

Celcom technical specialist Haizal Hambali was the next prosecution witness in the murder trial of Altantuya Shaariibuu, where he explained that a mobile phone caller and short message sender could be traced from the transmission station through the Location Code (LAC), Service Area Code (SAC) and Cell ID Code.

Haizal elaborated that LAc refers to a large area made up of several transmission stations. Each of these stations share the same LAC but has its own SAC. Cells IDs are a subset of LAC and their values are unique.

The codes can be used to determine the transmission station based on the strength of mobile signals, thus locating the caller, 32-year-old Haizal said. Haizal joined Celcom eight years ago and has been in his current position for the past three years.

It is learnt that Hazial obtained the LAC and cell ID data from accused Chief Inspector Azilah Hadri's SIM card. He then sent the findings to Mohd Firdaous Mohd Omar, a Celcom Malaysia special project and investigation department's executive, who formatted and presented Azilah's mobile details in previous hearings.

The trial continues on Thursday.

Sharlinie Missing: Second Doll, Police Impersonators

18 January 2008
Petaling Jaya

Police have found another doll in Gunung Rapat, Ipoh, similar to the one left in the area of Taman Medan last week where 5-year-old Sharlinie Mohd Nashar was last seen.

Sharlinie has been missing from a playground in Taman Medan on 9 January 2008.

A photograph of the doll was taken and eventually caught the attention of the police a few days ago. Petaling police are working with their Perak counterparts to verify the authenticity of the photograph and to contact the person who took it.

Meanwhile on Thursday, a man and his accomplice, both in their 20s, showed up at Sharlinie's house at 9:40pm, pretending to police officers from the Bukit Aman division.

They claimed to know about Sharlinie's whereabouts and to have seen her recently. They also asked for a clearer photograph of the girl.

Sharlinie's family members became suspicious of them and started searching for them after they left asking questions. The two were brought back to the house where one of them admitted that they were bogus policemen. The neighbours became furious and started assaulting them, but one of them managed to escape on a motorcycle.

The other man was handed over the police. He was sent to the University Malaya Medical Centre's (UMMC) psychiatric unit for observation, initially showing that he was mentally unstable.

Police said they have sought for help from Interpol although they have reasons to believe that she is still in the country. House-to-house searching in abandoned houses and buildings in the Klang Valley is still ongoing.

Altantuya Murder Trial: Celcom IT Analyst Data Accurate

17 January 2008
Shah Alam

Celcom information technology analyst Syed Mustaqim Syed Yusoff said in High Court yesterday that as the time taken to capture a call transaction is less than a second, the data extracted from the mobile switch would be accurate.

On the 78th day of the murder trial of Altantuya Shaariibuu, the 29-year-old said that if the data was corrupted, it could not be read, extracted or retrieved. Thus, the data which he had extracted showing that accused Chief Inspector Azilah Hadri was at Puncak Alam where Altantuya was murdered and blown up with explosives was not corrupted.

When questioned by Azilah's counsel J. Kuldeep Kumar earlier, he agreed that the data on Azilah's call transactions printed by Celcom's Investigation and Special Project Division executive Mohd Firdaous Mohd Omar was different from the one that he obtained from the switch.

Mohd Firdaous was requested by the investigating police to prepare Azilah's phone record details for the trial.

Hearing continues on Monday.

Altantuya Murder Trial: Prosecution Witness Admits Inaccurate Evidence

16 January 2008
Shah Alam

27-year-old Syed Mustaqim Syed Yusoff told the court yesterday in the murder trial of Altantuya Shaariibuu that evidence presented earlier on accused Chief Inspector Azilah Hadri's prepaid SIM card was inaccurate. The information technology analyst from Celcom made the admission because he said he was unfamiliar with the prepaid system.

Syed Mustaqim admitted this to counsel J. Kuldeep Kumar, who is representing Azilah. Judge Datuk Mohd Zaki Md Yasin showed his frustration by saying that he "just want to know if the phone transactions were made and received at the said locations."

Yesterday, he shared the flow of call data from the Mobile Switching Centre or the Intelligent Network, to the mediation system and then to the prepaid or postpaid system. He also explained certain technicalities of the scripting of the programme, the programme itself and the mobile network system.

Hearing continues today.
