Child Smuggling Syndicate from Myanmar Detected

30 October 2007
Rantau Panjang

During a random check on a suspicious van near Felda Kemahang 3 on Sunday at 6am, state anti-smuggling unit (UPP) officers uncovered a possible child smuggling syndicate.

When UPP officers approached the van, it sped off and a chase ensued. The van ended up in a ditch and the driver managed to escape into a rubber plantation. 21 people from Myanmar, including 15 children and some as young as 6 months old, were found in the van.

Two children were injured and warded at the Pasir Mas district hospital.

The case has been passed on to the immigration authorities.
