Credit Card Forgery Syndicate Members Caught

31 October 2007
Penang

Two men in their 20s are suspected to be members of an international credit card forgery syndicate and have been arrested in Bayan Lepas when they went to a courier company to send packages of cards.

On 19 October 2007, the men were arrested with about 100 cards embossed with security magnetic stripes and names of foreign banks in the United Kingdom, Spain, Italy and France. The cards would be encoded with user data by syndicate members upon reaching overseas markets.

As credit card companies in Malaysia have switched to using cards with microchips, known as smart cards, such syndicates resort to selling magnetic stripe cards internationally.

The duo are expected to be charged in court soon.

Recka Missing: Hoax

30 October 2007
Penang

Police have determined that 10-year-old Recka had made up the story on how she was abducted from a VCD shop along Market Street last week.

Recka was playing in the rain outside her Kampung Kolam house last Monday. She was then chided by a neighbour and she asked for RM5 from her 49-year-old stepfather Ahmad Omar on the pretext of buying a VCD. When she was approached at the shop by a woman whom she had befriended previously, Recka told her that she was afraid to return home to be scolded by her parents.

The woman decided to help her by giving her a place to stay at her Bandar Baru Air Itam apartment. Recka stayed there for three days while her parents and the police were searching for her.

When Recka saw the news on her parents' demise, she felt guilty and took a bus to Chulia Street on Thursday. Ahmad's friend spotted her and immediately brought her to the police at 10pm.

Police have interviewed the woman whom Recka met, the man who found her, and her parents. They are doubtful of Recka's state of mind and would be sending her to the Penang Hospital for psychiatric evaluation.

Ahmad and his wife have decided to hand over Recka to the Welfare Department as they found it difficult to control her. Both of them need to work to support their family of six children.

26 October 2007
Kuantan

A 19-year-old robber and rapist was shot dead by policemen when he and three others attempted to run over them in Bukit Sekilau yesterday.

Earlier, a 19-year-old female college student lodged a report claiming that the suspect, one named Mohd Arifudin Mohamad, had raped her. 26 October 2007
Penang

Recka, the 10-year-old schoolgirl who went missing after going to a night market to buy a VCD on Sunday was found by her stepfather's friend on Thursday at 9pm. The Standard Four student was dropped off outside a mosque in Lebuh Chulia by a bus driver, who found her in Bandar Baru Air Itam. 49-year-old Ahmad Omar's friend then sent the girl back to Ahmad's house.

Recka said that when she was at a VCD shop that night, an unknown woman approached her and lured her away with an ice cream. The woman had brought her to a flat in Bandar Baru Air Itam where she was fed and clothed but locked in a room. It is believed that the woman might have panicked when news of the girl missing spread.

The girl was sent to the Penang Hospital for a check-up. She had suffered only minor bruises and would be interviewed by the police.

Altantuya Murder Trial: Slippers and Shirts Not Tested

25 October 2007
Shah Alam

Superintendent Soo Me Tong continued his testimony at the witness stand of the murder trial of Mongolian Altantuya Shaariibuu yesterday, stating that he did not conduct tests on some shirts and did not swab a pair of bloodstained slippers found in accused Corporal Sirul Azhar Umar's vehicle.

He assumed that the shirts had belonged to Azhar and thus he deemed it unnecessary to test them. The slippers were sent to the Chemistry Department for tests. Soo did not perform fingerprint tests from the slippers as he thought the rough surface would not produce a usable fingerprint. He also found that the amount of soil on the slippers was insufficient for analysis.

When Soo was re-examined by Deputy Public Prosecutor Hanim Rashid, he explained that it was impractical to send every item found in the vehicle to the Chemistry Department due to logistics effort required.

Soo then told co-counsel Kamarul Hisham Kamaruddin that he did not recommend in his report to investigating officer ASP Tonny Lunggan to have the slippers tested for fingerprints. Soo felt that if he had tried to obtain fingerprints at his lab, the bloodstains would have been contaminated before the slippers reached the Chemistry Department.

Soo added that the best condition to obtain fingerprints would be immediately after the vehicle was recovered. Azhar's vehicle was moved and parked for some time at the city headquarters.

A 10-year-old Standard Four schoolgirl has gone missing after she had left her Kampung Kolam home along Acheen Street to a night market on Sunday at 9pm. Her stepfather, 49-year-old Ahmad Omar, had given her RM5 to buy a VCD there.

Recka failed to return home and Ahmad called his wife, 41-year-old Salma Sellamah Abdullah, who was working at a factory in Bayan Lepas at 4am. The couple and some of their neighbours went searching for her on Monday. They lodged a police report on Tuesday morning at the Central police station.

Nurin Murder Case: Woman in Red T-Shirt Not Involved

24 October 2007
Kuala Lumpur

Police have interviewed the woman in a red t-shirt captured in the closed-circuit television (CCTV) camera where 8-year-old Nurin Jazlin Jazimin's body was found. The 15-year-old girl surrendered to the authorities on Saturday and was released a few hours after her statement was recorded.

It is believed that she and the three men in the Perodua Kenari told police that they did not notice the sports bag that Nurin's body was discovered in nor the man on the Modenas Kriss motorcycle.

This leaves the man on the motorcycle as the only lead that may help in investigations. He was seen on CCTV camera stopping at the Petaling Utama shoplot and carrying the bag towards the shoplot on 16 September 2007.

Anyone with information on the man is advised to contact the police or send an SMS to the Rakan Cop hotline at 32728 or contact the investigating officer, Assistant Superintendent Loh Pei Pei, at 0193577008.

Boy Sexually Abused by Teenage Girls at Welfare Home

16 Oct 2007
Alor Star

A 6-year-old boy was allegedly sexually abused by a few teenage girls in a children's home in Kepala Batas which was operated by the state welfare department. The boy was sent there two years ago under a court order and his 38-year-old mother was only allowed to bring him back during festive holidays.

After her son acted suspiciously with his elder brother, his mother lodged a police report at the Kota Setar police station last Thursday, claiming that her son was a victim of sexual abuse and orgies involving the teenagers and preschoolers at the home.

The boy said that the girls would beat up the children if they did not follow their instructions, such as being stripped naked. Once, a girl threw a piece of wood at him for refusing to engage in sexual acts. He allegedly sustained an injured toe with the nail removed.

The case has been referred to the Kepala Batas district police headquarters and a Penang Welfare Department official has ordered an investigation at the home.

Two girls identified by the boy had left the home.

Nurin's Murder Case: Three Men in Vehicle Surrendered

13 October 2007
Kuala Lumpur

Three young men, aged between 19 and 25 years, have approached the police and identified themselves as the three who arrived at the crime scene in a Perodua Kenari where the naked body of kidnap-cum-murder victim Nurin Jazlin Jazimin was discovered. The three, including a student and two despatch riders, reported to the Selangor police headquarters on Thursday night after the FBI-enhanced video footages were released to the public.

They claimed they did not know the woman wearing a red top and blue jeans caught on video and had just given her a lift in their vehicle. They dropped her off at the Puduraya bus terminal in Kuala Lumpur. Police said that the woman is the same one publicized in one of the two photofits released earlier.

Police have indicated that they would pick up the woman soon with the help of the three youths.

Nurin's Murder Case: Enhanced CCTV Images Released

12 Oct 2007
Kuala Lumpur

With the enhanced images of the closed circuit television (CCTV) system provided by the United States Federal Bureau of Investigation, police are now able to make progress on the suspects responsible for the kidnap and murder of 8-year-old Nurin Jazlin Jazimin.

The images and video footage was released yesterday, revealing a man in a long-sleeved t-shirt seated on his Modenas Kriss motorcycle in front of the Petaling Utama shoplot, removing his helmet and having a conversation on his mobile phone. When he had finished his call, he walked towards the shop and lifted the Diadora sports bag that was placed between the motorcycle seat and front basket. Then he carried the bag towards the building and left in his motorcycle without the bag.

It was not possible to see the man's face or the motorcycle registration number clearly.

The next footage showed a woman in a red blouse and blue jeans walking around in front of the building. Three men pulled up at the scene in a silver Perodua Kenari and two of them came out. One was wearing a yellow shirt and the other a striped long-sleeved t-shirt. They were seen loitering around the area and chatting for a few minutes before they went back to the car. The woman also left with them.

The two videos were recorded on 16 September 2007 at 1pm, both an hour apart. The female photofit released on 2 October 2007 was based on the image of the woman in the red blouse and blue jeans.

Police are hoping that a Damansara Uptown taxi driver who drove past the area when the motorcyclist was at the scene could come forward to help them.

Police are asking anyone with information on the images, video footage and photofits to contact the police or send an SMS to the Rakan Cop hotline at 32728 or contact the investigation officer, Assistant Superintendent Loh Pei Pei, at 0193577008.

Deputy Internal Security Minister Datuk Mohd Johari Baharum also asked the public to report to the police immediately if and when they receive the post-mortem pictures of Nurin. He warned everyone who receive them not to circulate them further.

In addition to being charged under the Official Secrets Act, the person or persons responsible for leaking the pictures may face charges under the Malaysian Communications and Multimedia Commission Act. The pictures have also been circulated via e-mail.

Those convicted of distributing illegal content via the Internet could be fined a maximum of RM50,000 or face up to one year in jail or both.

Nurin's Murder Case: Post-mortem Photos Circulating, Indonesian Woman Released

11 Oct 2007
Kuala Lumpur

In response to the recent incident when kidnap-cum-murder victim Nurin Jazlin Jazimin's post-mortem photographs were circulated online and through mobile phones, Nurin's father Jazimin Abdul Jalil has lodged a police report at the Dang Wangi station and will take legal action against those responsible for the leak.

Police have not ruled out the possibility that policemen and hospital staff could have been involved in the leak. They have warned that they would not hesitate to invoke the Official Secrets Act (OSA) or Section 292 and Section 293 of the Penal Code against offenders.

Authorities have advised the public to refrain from spreading e-mail containing such pictures.

Police have released the 23-year-old Indonesian woman picked up at a night market in Nilai on 29 September 2007. After being detained for 12 days at the Petaling Jaya police headquarters, police have not found enough evidence to charge her, thus she was released and handed over to the Immigration Department for deportation.

Investigations revealed that there was no proof of SMS being sent from the woman's SIM card to Nurin's father and the police. When she was taken to the Petaling Jaya Sessions Court, she swallowed the card. Doctors at the University Malaya Medical Center managed to retrieve the card after eight days.

Altantuya Murder Trial: Two Analysts from Chemistry Department Testify

10 Oct 2007
Shah Alam

During yesterday's session of the murder trial of Mongolian Altantuya Shaariibuu, deputy public prosecutor Noorin Badaruddin asked why chemist Primulapathi decided to analyze just one out of five bone specimens found at the crime scene.

Primulapathi explained that pathologist Dr Mohd Shah Mahmood from the Kuala Lumpur Hospital told him that he has determined that the bones belonged to one person. Thus, Primulapathi needed to analyze just the skull fragment only.

Primulapathi also suggested that Altantuya's DNA profile was found on the inner jacket of the black leather jacket owned by accused Corporal Sirul Azhar Umar because Altantuya had either worn or handled it. The jacket could have been washed or cleaned before Altantuya had worn it as he could not find Azhar's DNA profile on it.

40-year-old Shaari Desa was the next witness. He is the firearms and tool-marks unit chief from the criminalistic section of the forensics division at the Chemistry Department.

On 13 November 2007, Shaari said he received 69 envelopes and a parcel from investigating officer ASP Tonny Lunggan for analysis. He was asked to analyze a firearm, some explosives including live bullets and bullet casings, and two sets of soil, one from the a vehicle tyre and the other from the crime scene.

The judge has postponed the hearing to 22 October 2007 when Shaari will tender 70 exhibits in court.

Altantuya Murder Trial: Chemist Director Did Not Analyze All Bone Specimens

9 Oct 2007
Shah Alam

J. Primulapathi was on the witness stand yesterday and was examined by the defence counsel over his analysis of the bone fragments found in the crime scene of the Altantuya Shaariibuu murder. The director of the forensics division at the Chemistry Department said that he received bone specimens labelled skull, spine, lumbar, pelvic and humerus but decided to analyze only the skull.

Primulapathi said that he did not examine the other four bone specimens because they were all collected from the same crime scene. This, however, prompted the defence counsel to suggest that the bones may have been collected from more than one location.

Primulapathi maintained that there was no way these bone fragments could be mixed up or contaminated.

The trial continues today.
