Shah Alam
Forensic consultant Dr Mohd Shah Mahmood from the Kuala Lumpur Hospital continued his testimony in the High Court trial of the murder of Altantuya Shaariibuu yesterday, indicating that the Mongolian woman might have been naked when she was blown up at the crime scene near Puncak Alam and Puncak Perdana.
He said this because there were no traces of fibre found when he went to inspect the area twice in November 2006. He had went there twice because he told investigating officer Assistant Superintendent Tonny Lunggan that the bone fragments that Dr Mohd Shah recovered at the site during his first visit was inadequate to form a complete human skeleton.
Lunggan had given Dr Mohd Shah 34 packets of bone fragments at the mortuary of the Forensic Department, which Dr Mohd Shah used to piece together and carry out examinations, with the assistance of forensic anthropologist Dr Nurliza Abdullah. The bone fragments were then handed over to the Chemistry Department.
He said that even after the second examination on 9 November 2006, the bone fragments were not enough to form a complete human skeleton.
The trial continues tomorrow.

Altantuya Murder Trial: 388 Bone Fragments Found
27 February 2008
Shah Alam
388 bone fragments were found at the crime scene where Mongolian Altantuya Shaariibuu was believed to have been blown up, according to 48-year-old Kuala Lumpur Hospital Forensic Department Head Dr Mohd Shah Mahmood. He had carried out inspections on 7 and 9 November 2006, retrieving fragments of the ribs, spine and neck in a clearing and shrubs on a hill.
Dr Mohd Shah did not find many skin tissue and hair and could not find any human flesh or blood during his two days of inspection.
On 7 November 2006 at 5pm, he conducted tests on the bone fragments and tissue to detect traces of explosives. He referred to x-ray expert Dr Zaleha Abdul Manaf and forensic anthropologist Dr Nurliza Abdullah for details on Altantuya.
Dr Mohd Shah concluded from the tests that an explosive had caused injury to the bones and cause it to break into fragments which were scattered in the area. He explained that the spine was intact because it was heavier and larger and that Altantuya was lying on her back causing the explosion on her chest to press the spine further into the ground.
Earlier in court, Lance Corporal Mohamad Ruzaimi Ramli said he was verbally ordered by his superior officer, Superintendent Amidon Anan to destroy all excess negatives in the film rolls used at the crime scene. He said he took 268 photographs on 7 and 9 November 2006, printed them and handed them to Amidon. 8 negatives were not used and were destroyed as ordered.
When called to the stand by counsel Ahmad Zaidi Zainal who is representing accused Corporal Sirul Azhar Umar, crime scene investigation unit and police forensics laboratory head Amidon denied making such an order and having any knowledge of the excess negatives.
The trial continues today.

Carjacking Gang Crippled by Police
25 February 2008
Petaling Jaya
Three men were arrested on 16 February 2008 and a stolen BMW vehicle was recovered in Shah Alam, leading to the arrest of three more and recovery of four more vehicles. The suspects are believed to be members of the Bumper Gang which have been responsible for at least 25 carjacking cases.
The other three were arrested in an apartment in Subang Jaya on 19 February 2008 and police seized a Honda Civic, Honda Accord, and Honda CRV.
The gang, which has been active in the Klang Valley and Selangor since October 2007, would usually fake a road accident by deliberately knocking into the back of victims' cars. The victims would then stop to check the damage which was when the gang would take off with their cars. The gang usually targeted cars with just the driver alone.
Several other suspects, including a woman, are wanted by the police. A Proton Wira vehicle, belonging to one of the suspects, was also seized with three car keys and four stolen mobile phones inside.

Altantuya Murder Trial: Razak's Unexpected Outburst
21 February 2008
Shah Alam
Before proceedings began for 90th day of the murder trial of Altantuya Shaariibuu, accused political analyst Abdul Razak Abdullah Baginda had an unusual and surprising outburst after his father Datuk Abdullah Malim Baginda whispered to him while he was in the dock at 9:30am.
Razak's face changed as he walked back to the holding cell, then he turned and shouted at his father, "Shall I shout it out?". His father indicated to him no, and then Razak kept shouting "I'm innocent! I'm innocent!" as he was led into the cell.
Celcom main network operations general manager Nik Kamarudin Nik Ka continued his testimony for the day. The 43-year-old said that although co-accused Chief Inspector Azilah Hadri's mobile call transactions overlapped one another and were unordered, they are the same. The calls were made on 21 October 2006 between 12:28am and 1:34am, but Azilah did not answer the calls. The transactions did show that Azilah was at the murder scene and had contacted the other two accused just before the murder.
After the proceedings were adjourned for lunch, Razak kicked the dock gate, stormed out, and went into tears after his father whispered to him again. Razak was heard saying, "Oh no, oh no".
Razak's mother, Datin Rohana Abdullah, then walked to the lock-up to calm Razak. Razak's counsel Wong Kian Kheong, who had left the court room earlier, returned to Razak at the lock-up but refused to explain Razak's unexpected behaviour.
The hearing continues on Monday.

Altantuya Murder Trial: Missing Data Retraced, Differences Negligible
20 February 2008
Shah Alam
Based on his 15 years of working experience in Celcom, 64th prosecution witness Nik Kamarudin Nik Ka said that despite several differences such as time and location area codes in call transactions extracted by his colleagues, he could confirm that accused Chief Inspector Azilah Hadri was indeed in the stated locations including the area where Mongolian Altantuya Shaariibuu was murdered.
The 43-year-old general manager was in High Court yesterday, giving his testimony on two documents, one containing call details and the other billing data. where were extracted from Celcom systems and entered as evidence. He said that the most significant difference was 5 minutes and 23 seconds found in Azilah's call transactions, but he said that they are accurate and have not been manipulated.

Altantuya Murder Trial: General Manager Clears Confusion
19 February 2008
Shah Alam
Nik Kamarudin Nik Ka from the Celcom Core Network Operations division testified at the High Court during the murder trial of Altantuya Shaariibuu yesterday, confirming the call transaction data of accused Chief Inspector Azilah Hadri.
The 43-year-old general manager said he retraced six transactions that have been challenged on their accuracy. Nik Kamarudin was shown two documents containing data on mobile phone calls and text messages sent by Azilah, which indicated Azilah had been at the murder scene and had been in contact with the two co-accused.
Nik Kamarudin said after his review of the data, he found that six short messages received by Azilah were not in the records extracted by Celcom executive Mohd Firdaous Mohd Omar but were found in the billings record retrieved by Celcom systems analyst Syed Mustaqim bin Syed Yusoff.
He explained that the discrepancies are due to the exchange where the data was retrieved from. On 17 October 2006, five of six short messages involving Azilah's mobile phone were captured at the Atabara, Kuantan, exchange while the other was at the Semambu exchange.
The trial continues today.

Shearwey Murder Case: Accused Found Dead in Prison
19 February 2008
Penang
Prison warders found former karaoke outlet manager Ong Chee Leong hanged at the Penang Prison along Jalan Gaol yesterday at 5:10pm. It is believed that the 29-year-old had hanged himself using a bed sheet and a beam.
He was still alive when warders brought him down and tried to revive him by performing cardio pulmonary resuscitation, but he died soon after.
Ong was charged with the murder of 3-year-old Shearwei Ooi Ying Ying at an apartment in Lengkok Angsana, Bandar Baru Air Itam, between 7.30am and 6.30pm on 5 July 2007. He was arrested on 8 July 2007 and his trial had been fixed for mention in High Court on 26 and 27 March 2008.
Ong was brought to the clinic from his prison cell for treatment after prison authorities noticed that he had been depressed for the past few days. Police have ruled out foul play and classified the case as sudden death. Ong's body has been sent to the Penang Hospital for a post-mortem.
Ying Ying's father, 29-year-old Ooi Eng Chew, said he was shocked to learn about Ong's death and hopes that the prosecution can apply to withdraw the murder charge so that his daughter's remains can be returned to him.
Ong's lawyer, S. Rethinakumar, was informed of his death by the prison authorities. Rethinakumar said he last spoke to Ong on 1 February 2008 and that he was supposed to visit Ong on Friday.

Altantuya Murder Trial: Azilah's Location Triangulated
15 February 2008
Shah Alam
As the murder trial of Mongolian Altantuya Shaariibuu entered its 87th day, Celcom technical specialist Haizal Hambali continued his testimony stating that he did not depend on just one source of information to trace the movement of accused Chief Inspector Azilah Hadri.
32-year-old Haizal said he used data from several transmission stations to triangulate Azilah's position at significant times. The data collected were the "Location Area Code" and "Service Area Code" from the transmission stations and Celcom's mobile exchange. Haizal spent almost five hours yesterday being re-examined by Deputy Public Prosecutor Tun Abdul Majid Tun Hamzah on the mobile phone transaction records.
Azilah's lawyer, counsel J. Kuldeep Kumar, also claimed that one of the transaction records showed that Azilah could not have been at the murder scene. The discrepancy in the records was due to technical errors made by Celcom staff during extraction of data from two different systems, which are the 2G and 3G systems.
He was refuting claims by counsel J. Kuldeep Kumar, the accused’s lawyer, that one of the records showed Azilah could not have been at the murder scene. Kuldeep suggested that according to records provided by Mohd Firdaous Mohd Omar of Celcom's Investigations and Special Projects Division, the location codes of Azilah were different from those provided by Haizal.
It is believed that Mohd Firdaous's data put Azilah in Jalan Pahang and not Damansara as showed by Haizal. On the day that Altantuya was murdered, Kuldeep said Azilah could have been at First World in Genting Highlands and not Pekan Subang.
The trail continues on Monday.

Altantuya Murder Trial: Azilah's Lawyer Rebuked
14 February 2008
Shah Alam
High Court Judge Datuk Mohd Zaki Md Yasin yesterday rebuked lawyer J. Kuldeep Kumar who represented accused Chief Inspector Azilah Hadri in the murder trial of Mongolian Altantuya Shaariibuu. He told him, "If this is a traffic summons case, I would have long stopped you from examining this witness further but this is a case involving a death sentence so I give you the opportunity to pose questions."
Kuldeep had spent almost three hours questioning Celcom mobile access planning technician Haizal Hambali on two call transaction records made by Azilah. These records have been produced in court in previous sessions by the prosecution.
Haizal denied making any test calls from places other than those listed in the transaction list. He also said he did not make any arrangement with the police to write down the names of transmission stations into the transaction list by tracing the route from the house of accused political analyst Abdul Razak Abdullah Baginda and the murder scene.

Altantuya Murder Trial: Transmission Stations List Led to Murder Scene
13 February 2008
Shah Alam
Haizal Hambali from Celcom said yesterday that he was taken by investigating police to a road next to the house of accused political analyst Abdul Razak Baginda on 16 June 2007.
As the High Court murder trial of Altantuya Shaariibuu progressed into its 85th day yesterday, the 32-year-old mobile access planning technician said that he was then led to the murder scene along the route based on the locations of transmission stations which were said to have captured voice calls and text messages made from accused Chief Inspector Azilah Hadri's mobile phone between 17 and 20 October 2006.
He said that he was brought along by the police to verify the transmission stations along the said route. Denying that the list of transmission stations were updated on that day, Haizal also testified that the road map indicating the locations of the transmission stations were accurate and complete.

Altantuya Murder Trial: Location of Caller Inaccurate
12 February 2008
Shah Alam
Celcom mobile access planning technician Haizal Hambali told the High Court murder trial of Mongolian Altantuya Shaariibuu that a transmission station could not accurately trace the location of a person using a mobile phone. A call transaction may not be captured by the nearest transmission station if it is handled by another transmission station with a stronger signal.
Haizal also said that the transaction could shift between transmission stations if the area is congested. The call signal may also be weak if the caller was in a jungle or hilly area.
Haizal is the 63rd prosecution witness in the trial and the third from Celcom who had given evidence on mobile phone calls and text messages said to have been made by accused Azilah on the night when Altantuya was murdered.
The trial continues today.

KL Crime Rate Down 7 Per Cent
6 February 2008
Kuala Lumpur
City CID chief Senior Assistant Commissioner (II) Ku Chin Wah said that the Kuala Lumpur crime rate dropped by 7.1% last year compared to 2006. The number of cases reported last year was 29,473 while there were 31,740 cases in 2006.
The solving rate for violent crimes and property crimes improved to 54.7% and 33.2% respectively. Snatch theft cases decreased by 999 cases while general property theft cases dropped by 2,308 cases. 37.5% of serious crime cases were solved.
However, violent crimes such as rape and unarmed gang robbery spiked up last year. Unarmed gang robbery saw a 95% increase, the largest jump which police attributed to a reclassification exercise conducted in October 2007. Amendments were made to Section 391 of the Penal Code, which now defines gang robbery as robbery committed by two or more people, instead of five or more people previously.
The number of rape cases increased from 147 in 2006 to 228 last year, up 55%. As rapists usually know their victims, the solving rate of such cases was 91.2%.
Motorcycle and car thefts increased by 667 cases, rising to a total of 9,995 cases. House break-ins have the biggest increase in the property crimes index with 2,489 cases last year, up 448 from 2006.

5 February 2008
Kuala Lumpur
50-year-old lieutenant colonel Zainal Mohd Ali was found guilty of 14 corruption charges and has been sentenced to 56 years' jail. Suspended as director of the armed forces' museum, the lieutenant colonel had claimed trial to the charges on 23 July 2003.
Zainal was charged with 8 counts of abusing his position, 5 counts for bribery and 1 count for using documents with a false statement. Counsel Jagdeep Singh Deo, who held a watching brief for Shearwey's father Ooi Eng Chew and his family, had earlier applied for the return of the bone fragments so that the family can conduct her funeral rites.
Jagdeep has also requested for an earlier hearing date.
Lawyer S. Rethinakumar told the court that he had just been appointed to be counsel for accused 29-year-old Ong Chee Leong. The former karaoke outlet manager was charged with the murder of Shearwey on 5 July 2007.
The judge had set 26 and 27 March 2008 for hearing.

Sharlinie Missing: Indonesian Maid Gets Jail Sentence
1 February 2008
Petaling Jaya
Police said the search for missing 5-year-old Sharlinie Mohd Nashar has been extended to more areas in the Klang Valley including farms and plantations. To date, police have checked more than 20,000 premises.
Sharlinie has been missing from a playground near her home in Taman Medan since 9 January 2008.
Meanwhile, the Indonesian maid who had sent six intimidating short messages to Sharlinie's father was sentenced to 7 months' jail yesterday. Sharlinie's father, 29-year-old Mohd Nashar Mat Hussein had received the messages anonymously for two days from 10 January 2008.
The maid, Sudarwanti, who was working in Johor Baru since last year, had used a mobile phone with a number registered under her employer's wife's name. She had sent messages saying that Sharlinie would never return because she wanted to seek revenge and warned him to keep quiet or she would throw his daughter.
She then warned him that his family would have to bear the consequences if they reported the matter to the police and that Sharlinie was already a victim of a molester. She said that Sharlinie was no longer with her and there would be another child missing.
Police arrested the maid in Jalan Straits View 3, Johor, on 16 January 2008.
Sudarwanti pleaded guilty to committing criminal intimidation at house No 10, Lorong PJS 2C/11N, Taman Medan, on 10 January 2008 at 4:07pm to 9:25am the next day. The judge ordered that her sentenced be served from 16 January 2008.
