Army Officer Sentenced 56 Years' Jail for Corruption

5 February 2008
Kuala Lumpur

50-year-old lieutenant colonel Zainal Mohd Ali was found guilty of 14 corruption charges and has been sentenced to 56 years' jail. Suspended as director of the armed forces' museum, the lieutenant colonel had claimed trial to the charges on 23 July 2003.

Zainal was charged with 8 counts of abusing his position, 5 counts for bribery and 1 count for using documents with a false statement. He was ordered to serve the jail terms concurrently from Tuesday, thus the accused who was with the army for 31 years will serve less than 4 years in jail effectively.

The judge reasoned that the offences were committed in one transaction.

Zainal had lost his right leg below the knee in the course of his duty in 1979.
