The 26-year-old mother of Chia Siow Eng was arrested by the police after the latter was left in a car for at least an hour on Tuesday at 9:30pm. The 4-year-old girl died after her mother returned to the car from a hypermarket in Kepong.
The mother claimed that she found the car was broken into and her wallet missing. She said Chia was unconscious and naked and proceeded to fetch her to the Selayang Hospital.
The examining doctor found bruises on her chest, ear, hip and forehead, thus police remanded the mother on suspicion of foul play when she lodged a report at the Sentul police headquarters. Police also arrested a close relative when they went to Chia's house in Taman Fadasan, Jinjang.
It is believed that the suspect had two boyfriends, one who was the father of the girl while the other the father of a 2-month-old baby with her.
Police have classified the case as murder and were investigating it under Section 302 of the Penal Code.
