Deputy public prosecutor Zalina Awang told the court yesterday that the bone fragments of 3-year-old Shearwey Ooi Ying Ying will only be released to her family once they have been tendered in court. Counsel Jagdeep Singh Deo, who held a watching brief for Shearwey's father Ooi Eng Chew and his family, had earlier applied for the return of the bone fragments so that the family can conduct her funeral rites.
Jagdeep has also requested for an earlier hearing date.
Lawyer S. Rethinakumar told the court that he had just been appointed to be counsel for accused 29-year-old Ong Chee Leong. The former karaoke outlet manager was charged with the murder of Shearwey on 5 July 2007.
The judge had set 26 and 27 March 2008 for hearing.
