Guard Shot Dead in Jewellery Shop Robbery

3 February 2008
Butterworth

Three armed robbers escaped with RM300,000 worth of jewellery from a goldsmith shop in a shopping mall in Seberang Jaya yesterday night, while one of them shot an unarmed security guard, killing him instantly.

The robbers were armed with two pistols and an AK-47 assault rifle when they entered the mall, wearing crash helmets, from a side entrance at 9pm. After firing several warning shots in the goldsmith shop, they forced the staff to fill up bags with jewellery. Five minutes later, they bumped into the security guard, who was hired by the mall.

After shooting the man, the robbers escaped on motorcycles parked at the same entrance.

The security guard, in his 40s, was taken to the Seberang Jaya Hospital for a post-mortem.

Police are investigating the case and have classified it as murder and armed robbery.
