Altantuya Murder Trial: Azilah's Location Triangulated

15 February 2008
Shah Alam

As the murder trial of Mongolian Altantuya Shaariibuu entered its 87th day, Celcom technical specialist Haizal Hambali continued his testimony stating that he did not depend on just one source of information to trace the movement of accused Chief Inspector Azilah Hadri.

32-year-old Haizal said he used data from several transmission stations to triangulate Azilah's position at significant times. The data collected were the "Location Area Code" and "Service Area Code" from the transmission stations and Celcom's mobile exchange. Haizal spent almost five hours yesterday being re-examined by Deputy Public Prosecutor Tun Abdul Majid Tun Hamzah on the mobile phone transaction records.

Azilah's lawyer, counsel J. Kuldeep Kumar, also claimed that one of the transaction records showed that Azilah could not have been at the murder scene. The discrepancy in the records was due to technical errors made by Celcom staff during extraction of data from two different systems, which are the 2G and 3G systems.

He was refuting claims by counsel J. Kuldeep Kumar, the accused’s lawyer, that one of the records showed Azilah could not have been at the murder scene. Kuldeep suggested that according to records provided by Mohd Firdaous Mohd Omar of Celcom's Investigations and Special Projects Division, the location codes of Azilah were different from those provided by Haizal.

It is believed that Mohd Firdaous's data put Azilah in Jalan Pahang and not Damansara as showed by Haizal. On the day that Altantuya was murdered, Kuldeep said Azilah could have been at First World in Genting Highlands and not Pekan Subang.

The trail continues on Monday.
