Commercial Crimes Investigation director Datuk Ramli Yusoff, who was a former Sabah police commissioner, was charged in court yesterday for abusing his powers by using a police Cessna Caravan plane to perform a survey on two plots of land at Ulu Tengku, Lahad Datu on 15 June 2007 at 7:50am.

The 55-year-old third-highest ranking police officer was accused of the offence committed at the Tanjung Aru Police Air Wing base together with two company partners of Syarikat Kinsajaya Sdn Bhd. The two directors, former Sabah Fifth Brigade Commander Brig Jen (Rtd) Datuk Muhamad Yasin and businessman Khalid Mohamad, were also charged under the Section 16 (1) of the Prevention of Corruption Act 1997.

Ramli pleaded not guilty to this charge, which is the fourth one since he was charged with corruption on 1 November 2007.

The judge has granted bail of RM10,000 in one surety and fixed his case for hearing from 18 to 22 February 2008.

Ramli faces jail time between 14 days and 20 years and a minimum fine of RM10,000, or both.

Meanwhile, a group of villagers were protesting outside of the court claiming that a 640 hectare of land which they have been living on for more than 50 years have been taken away by Ramli.
