Altantuya Murder Trial: Azhar's Jeep Analyzed and Identified

6 November 2007
Shah Alam

During cross-examination by deputy public prosecutor Noorin Badaruddin in the murder trial of Altantuya Shaariibuu, Chemistry Department firearms and toll marks unit chief Shaari Desa noted that the soil specimen taken from Corporal Sirul Azhar Umar's jeep did not match the samples taken from the location where the Mongolian victim was believed to have been murdered.

Two samples were taken from the crime scene, one was 35 metres from the exact spot while the other was at 50 metres. They match in density and composition. However, two samples from the mudguard of Azhar's vehicle and the right front rim did not match each other and those from the crime scene.

Shaari did acknowledge that soil samples taken from the same location could have varying density and composition properties as they could be taken from different depths and weather may play an affecting role.

He went on to explain that there were no explosive residue detected on four of Altantuya's bone fragments. 17 other exhibits tested positive for explosives, including the four tufts of hair samples, and soil samples labelled head, stomach and feet..

The items had contained pentaerythritol tetranitrate (PETN) and cyclotrimethylene trinitramine (RDX), which are common types of explosives and often used by the military.

Shaari also found gun powder residue in a sub-machine gun's barrel and silencer, which matched a bullet cartridge found in Azhar's vehicle. He concluded that the bullet in the jeep was fired from this gun.

The next witness to take to the stand was Cybersecurity Malaysia's forensic digital senior analyst Mohd Zabri Aidil Talib. He told the court that based on "forensic video CCTV", he was able to determine that the vehicle that passed through the Kota Damansara toll plaza on the night that Altantuya was murdered was no other than the one belonging to Azhar.

The 28-year-old analyst also said that by using special equipment, he could see that the windscreen stickers, spotlights, fog lamps and roof of the vehicle which were consistent with Azhar's vehicle, which passed through on 19 October 2006 at 7:14pm.

The trial continues on Monday.
