Twelve Prisons Department Staff Caught for Smuggling Drugs

12 Prisons Department staff have been nabbed for smuggling drugs into prison quarters and have been removed from service. One of them was an officer and the rest prison wardens.

Under the Dangerous Drugs (Special Preventive Measures) Act 1985, the staff have been sent to detention centres in Simpang Renggam, Batu Gajah and Muar for 2 years.

The latest move by the department is part of a yearly exercise which comprises of a special team that made surprise checks and audits on all prisons in the country. An intelligence unit was also set up to catch prison staff for negligence of duty, and smuggling items such as drugs, tobacco, mobile phones and money into prison.
