Theme Park Foreign Worker Accused of Molest

30 December 2007
Shah Alam

A foreign worker allegedly molested a 7-year-old girl at a theme park. The girl's parents had lodged a report at the Section 11 police station yesterday after the incident occurred on Friday at 4pm.

The girl was at a water slide when the suspect had undone the front zipper of the girl's swimsuit and held her by the shoulders. A 14-year-old girl witnessed the incident and alerted the mother. The suspect claimed that he was trying to save the girl from falling off the water slide.

The mother claimed that a theme park supervisor had offered the family discount vouchers and a holiday if they did not reported the matter to the police. A senior manager had asked them to wait until yesterday to investigate the matter and denied that the supervisor had made such an offer. He contacted the family yesterday to explain that the suspect was preventing the girl from performing dangerous stunts at the slide.

The theme park management had also lodged a report at the same police station.

Altantuya Murder Trial: Mobile Phone Call Locations Challenged

20 December 2007
Shah Alam

The lawyer for accused Chief Inspector Azilah Hadri, J. Kuldeep, has contended in High Court yesterday that his client was not in Puncak Alam on the night when murder victim Altantuya Shaariibuu went missing and where she was blown to pieces.

Kuldeep put it to 30-year-old Celcom special projects and investigations division executive Mohd Firdaous Mohd Omar that Azilah was with his current girlfriend Norazila Baharuddin on 19 October 20076 at 9:41pm when a phone call was made to accused and political analyst Abdul Razak Baginda from the "019" number registered under Norazila's name. This call was supposedly answered by Lance Corporal Rohaniza Roslan, who was the girlfriend of Azilah at that time.

Kuldeep suggested that the couple were at Bukit Aman and not at the Jalan Duta toll plaza, contrary to the Celcom transaction logs derived by Mohd Firdaous. At 10:43pm, they were heading to Wangsa Maju and were along the Middle Ring Road 2 in Batu Caves and Jalan Kuching back from Wangsa Maju at 11:28pm, not at Puncak Perdana as the Celcom records show. At the latter time, a phone call was made to Rohaniza from the "019" number.

Mohd Firdaous disagreed with the assertions presented.

The trial continues on 2 January 2008.

Altantuya Murder Trial: Azilah and Rohaniza Made Calls in Puncak Alam and Kota Damansara

19 December 2007
Shah Alam

Mohd Firdaous Mohd Omar from Celcom's special projects and investigations division told the High Court trial of murder victim and Mongolian Altantuya Shaariibuu that the "019" mobile phone number that was registered under Norazila Baharuddin from 15 April 2006 was used to answer a 20-second call on 19 October 2006 at Puncak Alam.

Norazila was accused Chief Inspector Azilah Hadri's girlfriend and Puncak Alam was the area where Altantuya was blown up. Lance Corporal Rohaniza Roslan had previously testified in court that Azilah was using the number at that time.

30-year-old Mohd Firdaous added that at 10:43pm that night, the number had answered a call made from a "012" number that was registered under Rohaniza. At this time, the "012" number was located at Section 4, Kota Damansara.

Then, Norazila's "019" number received an anonymous SMS at 11:16pm. The number was then used to call Rohaniza at 11:28pm, lasting for a minute. The call was made from Puncak Perdana.

From the Celcom records, it was also determined that Rohaniza called the "019" number back at 11:48pm for 104 seconds.

Azilah's name was also recorded in the Celcom customer service system under this "019" number, suggesting that he could have made enquiries with Celcom previously.

Mohd Firdaous testified to the court that the police had made requests on 30 May, 25 September and 15 November 2007 to obtain mobile phone transaction records for Azilah and Rohaniza.

Altantuya Murder Trial: Bomb Expert Continues Testimony

11 December 2007
Shah Alam

Former head of the police forensic laboratory DSP Muhammad Koey Abdullah continued his testimony in High Court yesterday saying that there were no bullet casings or traces of blood to be found in the crime scene where Mongolian Altantuya Shaariibuu was allegedly murdered and blown up using explosives.

The 46-year-old said he was unable to determine if Altantuya had died from the explosion or not as this was beyond his expertise. He described to accused Corporal Sirul Azhar Umar's lawyer, Ahmad Zaidi Zainal, that the explosive was likely placed on the left side of Altantuya's body and that the person who set off the explosion likely took cover behind a vehicle.

Koey added that the person might not have needed to hide behind a vehicle if the amount of explosives used were little, but it was standard procedure for explosives experts. He said that the person might not have to wear protective goggles to protect his eyes from a spark of ultraviolet light during the explosion as it would have been very quick.

Koey said a rubber tube was found at the crime scene that was used in the murder but not as a component in the explosion.

Road Transport and Traffic Police Department Officers Arrested for Sticker Scam

11 December 2007
Kuala Lumpur

The Anti-Corruption Agency (ACA) has arrested eight in Selangor over a protection scam involving hundreds of thousands of ringgit. ACA officers seized stickers used on road vehicles that provides immunity against police road blacks because they bear initials such as KCE, KCHAI, BoB, VML, John, KFC, CB and one with a star-shaped symbol.

Three Road Transport Department (JPJ) officers, a traffic police corporal and four runners were arrested. It is believed that they have been selling such stickers to lorry owners as some of them have to transport sand and earth for between RM500 and RM700 per month per trip. With the stickers, such overloaded lorries would not be stopped, summonsed or be weighed. If they were held, a syndicate member would contact the involved officer to "settle" the case.

The syndicate produced the stickers and its members shared the takings monthly. The ACA believes that the syndicate has members all over the country in the JPJ and traffic police department.

Altantuya Murder Trial: Small Amount of Explosive Used

6 December 2007
Shah Alam

As the murder trial of Altantuya Shaariibuu continued on its 66th day yesterday, former post-blast investigation section head DSP Muhammad Koey Abdullah expounded on the technicalities of explosives related to the case.

He explained that based on the high amount of RDX found, it was a "high explosion". However, there was no crater found in the ground of the crime scene, therefore only a small amount of explosive could have been used.

Although a claymore mine wire was found there, Muhammad Koey said a claymore mine was not used. Instead, its wire was probably used as an accessory. If such a mine had been used, a crater would have been formed and ball bearings would have been found.

Muhammad Koey added that personnel from the Bomb Disposal Unit, General Operations Force and Special Operations Forces are given basic training in handling bombs. After they have gone through basic and advanced courses, they are required to follow strict usage procedures.

The trial continues on Monday.

17-year-old Charged for Rape and Molest of College Student

6 December 2007
Kuala Lumpur

A 17-year-old teenager was charged yesterday for attempting to rape, molest and causing hurt to a 18-year-old female first-year business studies student at the Tunku Abdul Rahman College on 21 April 2007 between 5:30pm and 5:50pm. He was working there as a security guard.

In court yesterday, the magistrate ordered that he be sent to Henry Gurney home for juvenile offenders to stay for three years. A good behaviour bond for three years after his release from the school has been placed on him as well.

The teenager pleaded guilty to:
  1. causing hurt to the victim at TARC Lecture Hall B
  2. attempting to rape her at Lecture Hall 2
  3. molesting her at Lecture Hall 2
On that day, the teenager had hit the victim on the head with a rock as she was walking in front of Lecture Hall B. He then dragged her to a storeroom in Lecture Hall 2 where he undressed and molested her. When she started to scream, he hit her repeatedly on the head with the rock. After he tried in vain to rape her, he used some clothes to form a rope and attempted to strangle her.

The victim managed to escape from her and went to a clinic for a checkup. She had to receive eight stitches on the back of her head and still has blurred vision in her right eye.

If the teenager had committed the offences a month later, he would have been sentenced to a maximum of 23 years' jail and caning.

Altantuya Murder Trial: Plastic Explosives Used to Detonate Altantuya

5 December 2007
Shah Alam

46-year-old DSP Muhammad Koey Abdullah, a former post-blast investigation department head at the police forensic laboratory, continued his witness yesterday in the trial of 28-year-old Altantuya Shaariibuu, who was murdered on 19 October 2006. He said that explosive substances were likely inserted in the victim's mouth or on her face and on her upper limbs and lower abdomen while she was lying face up.

Muhammad Koey worked at the forensic laboratory from 2004 till the end of 2006, after which he pursued a diploma course on investigation science at a local college.

During investigations at the crime scene, he consulted with pathologist Dr Mohd Shah Mahmood on the explosion, indicating that the largest skull piece about the size of a 50 sen coin with hair blown off was found. Thus, he believed that an explosive substance was placed on the hairless part of the head, probably the forehead, face, or mouth.

He also suggested that plastic explosives (PE) in small quantities were used as the main charge in the explosion. If larger quantities were used, he said they would not be able to find skull and bone fragments. Then, he further explained that a booster would be required to detonate PE. In this case, he said a secondary high-powered explosive substance known as RDX was found at the crime scene. RDX can be found in PE types PP01 and PE-N12B1.

The firing of the explosion was determined to be 14.5 metres from where Altantuya was believed to be placed, known as the "seat of explosion", as wire pieces were found there. The electric detonator was also found at the seat of explosion.

The trial continues today.

Altantuya Murder Trial: Amidon Identified Azilah and Azhar on CCTV

4 December 2007
Shah Alam

56-year-old superintendent Amidon Anan continued his testimony in High Court yesterday, stating that he could positively identify Chief Inspector Azilah Hadri at Hotel Malaya. Victim Altantuya Shaariibuu had stayed in that hotel last year before she disappeared and was murdered.

The current head of Bukit Aman's Crime Scene Investigation department said Azilah was his subordinate previously and had met him in several robbery and murder cases.

Amidon had spent five hours watching the closed-circuit television recording obtained from Hotel Malaya's cameras. He told the court that he could identify Azilah and jointly-accused Corporal Sirul Azhar Umar. The recording was dated 18 October 2006 between 4:50pm and 5pm, a day before Altantuya was murdered.

When Amidon was cross-examined by counsel Datuk Hazman Ahmad, who is representing Azilah, and counsel Kamarul Hisham Kamaruddin, who is representing Azhar, he agreed that his identification was inconclusive as he admitted he was not a forensic video anthropologist.
