Taiwanese Held for International SMS Lucky Draw Scam

Police have detained seven Taiwanese nationals over an international SMS scam. Many Penangites have allegedly fallen prey to the Chinese SMS that they received, indicating that they had won a lucky draw.

The suspects, aged between 20 and 30 years, including a woman, taken to Manjung, Perak at 5:30pm yesterday. Six men are at the Patani Road police station and the woman is held at the Bandar Baru Air Itam police station. They are suspected to be involved in a lucky draw scam syndicate based in Taiwan and Hong Kong.

It is believed that Malaysians have lost RM35 million so far this year to such international scams. There have been 163 such cases reported since January.
