Before proceedings on the Altantuya Shaariibuu murder trial closed yesterday, Deputy Public Prosecutor announced that the prosecution was seeking to impeach DSP Yusri Hasan Basri. Yusri was a Special Action Squad (UTK) member and a working colleague of accused Corporal Sirul Azhar Umar. He was giving his testimony in a trial-within-a-trial to decide if Azhar's statement that led to the discovery of Altantuya's belongings in Azhar's apartment can be admitted in court.
Previously on 2 July 2007, the prosecution applied to impeach prosecution witness Lance Corporal Rohaniza Roslan whose testimony in court differed from her police statement.
Yusri testified in court yesterday that he went to Azhar's apartment in Kota Damansara on 7 November 2007 to collect UTK items and had met ASP Zulkarnain Samsudin and several officers from the Bukit Aman serious crimes division (D9).
Initially, Yusri said that Zulkarnain allowed him to search the apartment for UTK items only after the latter had finished with his investigations. Later, Yusri changed that Zulkarnain only said yes.
When Yusri followed the D9 officers into the apartment, he said he saw Azhar already at the dining table of the apartment. After a break in court, Yusri then said that after consulting one of the D9 officers, Seargent Rosli Ibrahim, he said that Azhar had entered the apartment and immediately went to the dining area to wait for further instructions.
Then, Yusri entered Azhar's room with Zulkarnain, Rosli and some D9 officers. He could not recall the number of people in the room nor the duration that they were there for. He claimed that Rosli performed the search in the room and thus he could not remember the items that he and his team took away from the room.
