Altantuya Murder Trial: Confusion over Amendments to Zulkarnain's Police Reports

26 September 2007
Shah Alam

Corporal Sim Gek Huang, aged 35, was a supervisor of the computerised Police Reporting System when Assistant Superintendent Zulkarnain Samsudin called her on 7 November 2006 around 6pm to amend a police report lodged earlier that day. She was taking the witness stand in the murder trial of Mongolian Altantuya Shaariibuu.

Zulkarnain submitted a support helpdesk form to make the following amendments:
  • "Shamsuddin" was changed to "Samsudin" (Zulkarnain's last name)
  • amend "suspect's name" to "suspect Sirul Azhar bin Haji Umar"
  • "‘the said person" was changed to "suspect"
  • add the word "something" after the word "revelation"
  • amend the word "regarding" to "in connection with"
  • Zulkarnain's birthdate, which was incorrectly stored as 5 October 2073
However, Sim noted that Zulkarnain did not explain the reason for the changes, which was normally required. She also told the court that only the amended report can be displayed while the original was no longer available.

Constable Mazlinwaheeda Mansor, aged 23, from the Bukit Aman IT division said that she received a phone call from Zulkarnain on 13 December 2006 at 1am requested to amend the address of accused Corporal Sirul Azhar's Kota Damansara apartment address from "5-2-4" to "5-3-7". The wrong address was recorded in a police report made on 7 November 2006 after police searched the unit.

Chief Inspector Irwansyah Abdul Basir, aged 32 and officer-in-charge of Tun H.S. Lee police station and Seargent Major Latif Awang, aged 52 and officer-in-charge of Kota Damansara police station, both said that they would not know of any amendments to police reports under their jurisdictions if they were not informed. The latter witness said that he was told by one of his officers that the apartment number in Zulkarnain's report was amended on 7 November 2006 at 6:30pm.
