Couple Remanded Over Death of Baby Girl

Johor Baru

A young couple from Taman Skudai Baru whose 17-month-old girl was admitted to the Puteri Specialist Hospital but died on the way there, have been remanded by police to assist in investigations. It is believed that the girl, Chin Shyan Ping, probably died as a victim of abuse as there were multiple injuries and bruises over her body and face.

The 18-year-old mother and 22-year-old father had earlier sent her to a clinic on Wednesday at 8:30pm, citing breathing difficulties. As the doctor did not have the suitable equipment to treat the victim, they were advised to send her to the Sultanah Aminah Hospital.

Instead, the parents brought her to the private hospital but she died on the way there. The girl's body has been sent to Sultanah Aminah Hospital for the post-mortem.

The mother then lodged a police report at the Johor Baru (North) district police headquarters at about midnight yesterday, claiming that her daughter's injuries were caused by a fall and hot water that had spilled onto her. However, the doctor at the Puteri Specialist Hospital indicated that the injuries on her body suggests that she was physically abused.

The couple has been detained under Section 302 of the Penal Code for murder.

The victim was brought up by her grandmother who lives in Cha’ah, Segamat. She had a 5-month-old sister, who is being taken care of by the father's parents. When the grandmother's health deteriorated, she sent the girl back to her parents who lived in a rented room of a shophouse in Taman Skudai Baru. They had moved into the room about two weeks ago.

Police are awaiting the results of the post-mortem.
