Mentri Besar Datuk Seri Dr Mohamad Khir Toyo said Selangor will install about 200 closed-circuit television (CCTV) cameras in crime-prone and industrial areas by early next year. The effort is aimed to reduce the crime rate, catch people who dump rubbish illegally or commit parking offences.
Dr Khir of the state government said the cameras will cost about RM3 million and will be linked to the police stations and local council monitoring stations. He said that this will not be a way "to monitor the public but just looking into ways to enable enforcement agencies to act faster when there is a problem".
The first phase will see cameras installed in Subang Jaya, Petaling Jaya, Shah Alam, Klang and Ampang Jaya.
