Chief Inspector Kamaroszaman Othman was the 22nd prosecution witness in the Altantuya Shaariibuu murder trial, who had interrogated accused Corporal Sirul Azhar Umar on 6 November 2006. His testimony on how Azhar had told him that the latter was able to show him the location where the Mongolian was allegedly murdered was expunged by Judge Datuk Mohd Zaki Md Yasin.
This came after Azhar's counsel, Kamarul Hisham Kamaruddin, objected that this would incriminate his client. Kamaroszaman said Azhar said "I can tell you what really happened and show you where it occurred. It happened at a forest in Puncak Alam, Shah Alam, near a water tank".
Tun Majid has agreed to exclude the statements from records but they would be adduced in court to show the conduct of the accused.
Kamaroszaman described that his superior, Bukit Aman interrogation chief DSP Zainudin Abdul Samad, told him to interrogate Azhar at 9am that day at the serious crimes division (D9). Although both divisions were at the Bukit Aman police headquarters, Kamaroszaman said he only arrived at the office about 11am because he and his officers had tea.
Chief Inspector Koh Fei Cheow had handed Azhar over handcuffed to Kamaroszaman for interrogation. After Azhar allegedly offered to show the crime scene location, Kamaroszaman informed investigating officer ASP Tonny Lunggan.
He then followed the group of police cars lead by the Pajero in his own car, but he was not aware of the Pajero's heading or its passengers.
The 23rd witness, ASP Zulkarnain Samsudin then told the court that Azhar had allegedly said "I can tell you where the woman was blasted", which prompted judge Mohd Zaki to adjourn the proceedings. DPP Tun Abd Majid Tun Hamzah and Kamarul Hisham Kamaruddin had to present their respective positions on whether Zulkarnain's evidence should be admitted into court.
Kamarul said that his statement is "information leading to the discovery which cannot be tendered in court", while Tun Majid said that it is admissible as it only demonstrated Azhar's conduct and did not directly confessed to the act.
Zulkarnain had accompanied Azhar and investigating officer ASP Tonny Lunggan to the crime scene about 7pm on 6 November 2006. He was the officer who arrested Chief Inspector Azilah Hadri after he had received the instruction from his superior, Superintendent Zainol Samah, on 1 November 2006. He seized a mobile phone and a SIM card from Azilah soon after his arrest. Upon examining his wallet, he found and confiscated two more SIM cards and handed all the items to Lunggan.
After his two-hour interrogation of Azilah, he then instructed sergeant Hamdan Abdul Aziz to arrest Azilah’s girlfriend, Lance Corporal Rohaniza Roslan, at the Petaling Jaya district police headquarters to assist police investigations. Zulkarnain and another police officer went to the Petaling Jaya district police staff quarters at 11:45pm and confiscated Rohaniza’s red Proton Wira Aeroback.
