30 July 2007
Kuala Lumpur

The new owner of a luxury condominium unit in Mont Kiara made a gruesome find when he opened the door of a refrigerator there yesterday. A body of an unidentified man was cut into 11 pieces and placed in five black garbage bags inside.

The owner, in his 30s, said he found the body when he went to clean the 19th floor apartment unit, which he said had been vacant for more than three months. He had received the keys to the unit on Friday.

When he opened the apartment door, he detected a strong smell and alerted the security guards. They found the body in the refrigerator sealed with masking tape.

Police believe that the body had been there for a week and found a photocopy of a driving licence of one Nora Jawi Spreen Jawi with the address USJ2/4D Subang Jaya.

28 July 2007

Another Interrogator's Testimony May Be Expunged in Altantuya Trial

27 July 2007
Shah Alam

Chief Inspector Kamaroszaman Othman was the 22nd prosecution witness in the Altantuya Shaariibuu murder trial, who had interrogated accused Corporal Sirul Azhar Umar on 6 November 2006. His testimony on how Azhar had told him that the latter was able to show him the location where the Mongolian was allegedly murdered was expunged by Judge Datuk Mohd Zaki Md Yasin.

This came after Azhar's counsel, Kamarul Hisham Kamaruddin, objected that this would incriminate his client. Kamaroszaman said Azhar said "I can tell you what really happened and show you where it occurred. It happened at a forest in Puncak Alam, Shah Alam, near a water tank".

Tun Majid has agreed to exclude the statements from records but they would be adduced in court to show the conduct of the accused.

Kamaroszaman described that his superior, Bukit Aman interrogation chief DSP Zainudin Abdul Samad, told him to interrogate Azhar at 9am that day at the serious crimes division (D9). Although both divisions were at the Bukit Aman police headquarters, Kamaroszaman said he only arrived at the office about 11am because he and his officers had tea.

Chief Inspector Koh Fei Cheow had handed Azhar over handcuffed to Kamaroszaman for interrogation. After Azhar allegedly offered to show the crime scene location, Kamaroszaman informed investigating officer ASP Tonny Lunggan.

He then followed the group of police cars lead by the Pajero in his own car, but he was not aware of the Pajero's heading or its passengers.

The 23rd witness, ASP Zulkarnain Samsudin then told the court that Azhar had allegedly said "I can tell you where the woman was blasted", which prompted judge Mohd Zaki to adjourn the proceedings. DPP Tun Abd Majid Tun Hamzah and Kamarul Hisham Kamaruddin had to present their respective positions on whether Zulkarnain's evidence should be admitted into court.

Kamarul said that his statement is "information leading to the discovery which cannot be tendered in court", while Tun Majid said that it is admissible as it only demonstrated Azhar's conduct and did not directly confessed to the act.

Zulkarnain had accompanied Azhar and investigating officer ASP Tonny Lunggan to the crime scene about 7pm on 6 November 2006. He was the officer who arrested Chief Inspector Azilah Hadri after he had received the instruction from his superior, Superintendent Zainol Samah, on 1 November 2006. He seized a mobile phone and a SIM card from Azilah soon after his arrest. Upon examining his wallet, he found and confiscated two more SIM cards and handed all the items to Lunggan.

After his two-hour interrogation of Azilah, he then instructed sergeant Hamdan Abdul Aziz to arrest Azilah’s girlfriend, Lance Corporal Rohaniza Roslan, at the Petaling Jaya district police headquarters to assist police investigations. Zulkarnain and another police officer went to the Petaling Jaya district police staff quarters at 11:45pm and confiscated Rohaniza’s red Proton Wira Aeroback.

Couple Remanded Over Death of Baby Girl

27 July 2007
Johor Baru

A young couple from Taman Skudai Baru whose 17-month-old girl was admitted to the Puteri Specialist Hospital but died on the way there, have been remanded by police to assist in investigations. It is believed that the girl, Chin Shyan Ping, probably died as a victim of abuse as there were multiple injuries and bruises over her body and face.

The 18-year-old mother and 22-year-old father had earlier sent her to a clinic on Wednesday at 8:30pm, citing breathing difficulties. As the doctor did not have the suitable equipment to treat the victim, they were advised to send her to the Sultanah Aminah Hospital.

Instead, the parents brought her to the private hospital but she died on the way there. The girl's body has been sent to Sultanah Aminah Hospital for the post-mortem.

The mother then lodged a police report at the Johor Baru (North) district police headquarters at about midnight yesterday, claiming that her daughter's injuries were caused by a fall and hot water that had spilled onto her. However, the doctor at the Puteri Specialist Hospital indicated that the injuries on her body suggests that she was physically abused.

The couple has been detained under Section 302 of the Penal Code for murder.

The victim was brought up by her grandmother who lives in Cha’ah, Segamat. She had a 5-month-old sister, who is being taken care of by the father's parents. When the grandmother's health deteriorated, she sent the girl back to her parents who lived in a rented room of a shophouse in Taman Skudai Baru. They had moved into the room about two weeks ago.

Police are awaiting the results of the post-mortem.

Altantuya Chief Interrogator Testimony Strongly Questioned

26 July 2007
Shah Alam

Yesterday was day 24 of the murder trial of Mongolian Altantuya Shaariibuu, who was shot and blown up using explosives last October.

Bukit Aman chief interrogator Deputy Superintendent Zainudin Abdul Samad told the court yesterday that accused Chief Inspector Azilah Hadri revealed he had a lover, Lance Corporal Rohaniza Roslan, during an interrogation session on 2 November 2006. Azilah also told Zainudin that he had spent the first five years in the police force as an investigating officer in the Sepang police district before joining the Special Action Force (UTK).

Zainudin said Azilah and himself were involved in a special assignment in Penang last year for two and a half months and met each other a few times. They did not interact with each other as they were carrying out covert operations. However, when Zainudin was cross-examined by Hazman Ahmad, counsel for Azilah, he denied that he was biased in his interrogations with Azilah since he knew him beforehand. Zainudin also denied that he had induced, threatened or made any promises to Azilah during the 5-day interrogation. He said he did not threaten to arrest Roslan.

Hazman further grilled the 21st prosecution witness by asking Zainudin if he knew that second accused Corporal Sirul Azhar Umar had been brought back from Pakistan on 6 November 2006 by UTK second-in-command Asst Comm Mastor Mohd Ariff, which he admitted he did not.

The court then heard Zainudin say that he could not recall the exact number of passengers and their identities in the four-wheel-drive vehicle which he was in together with Azilah when they were heading to the crime scene in Puncak Alam. He said he could only remember that Chief Inspector "Koh Fei Cheow was sitting in the backseat together with Chief Inspector Azilah and a few other policemen."

Zainudin then denied that he made and received any calls on his mobile phone while en route to the crime scene to get directions to the location.

Hazman then questioned Zainudin on whether he still had his official investigation diary from nine months ago. Zainudin replied that he could not recall where it was and was not aware how long it must be kept before it could be replaced. He admitted that he had been careless in not recording details of the discovery of the crime scene when they went there.

Hazman suggested that Zainudin was trying to suppress evidence by not taking notes but when Zainudin was later examined by deputy public prosecutor Tun Abd Majid Tun Hamzah, he explained that it was because he was not on official duty.

Zainudin could not explain why his name was left out of Koh's police report on the discovery of the crime scene, which was in contradiction to Koh's earlier testimony that the exclusion was because Zainudim had told him that there was no need to include his name.

Maid Accused of Abusing Six Month Old Baby

26 July 2007
Penang

28-year-old Lor Siew Bee has reported to the police about her 23-year-old Indonesian maid, who allegedly abused the housewife's 6-month-old baby boy. The maid has been working for Lor for 4 months.

Lor found a swell on the forehead of her son, Teoh Kyean, after she returned home from shopping on Sunday. The maid apparently said that he had knocked his head on the floor while trying to turn over. Lor and her 30-year-old husband later took their son to a private hospital in Burma Road where the doctor detected a fracture in his leg.

Lor lodged a report at the Patani Road police station on Tuesday, while police had sent the maid to the Indonesian Consulate in Burma Road after some questioning.

Altantuya Defence Contended that Accused was Insinuated

25 July 2007
Shah Alam

Chief Inspector Koh Fei Cheow was cross-examined by Kamarul Hisham Kamaruddin, who is appearing for accused Corporal Sirul Azhar Umar, in the murder trial of Altantuya Shaariibuu yesterday. Koh said he did not record what Azilah had said about the location of the crime scene in his 6 November 2006 police report.

Kamarul put forth to the court that Koh had just recorded implied speech of Azilah instead of implicitly indicating that "this was the spot where the Mongolian woman was shot or where she was blasted with explosives" in contrast to what he had testified in court earlier. Kamarul suggested that Koh did not record Azilah's statements during interrogation because the later did not have anything to reveal.

Koh later denied that he had entered Azilah's house bedroom in Kota Damansara with some other police officers, closed the door and left Azilah in the living room for 15 minutes before he was taken in to locate some of Altantuya's belongings. Some jewellery and a watch were found in his black jacket in a clothes closet. Koh said he did not instruct Azilah to hold the jacket and point to where the items were.

Koh denied that the Bukit Aman interrogation division head, Deputy Superintendent Zainudin Abdul Samad, had ordered Azilah by saying "Go forward, go forward. Point it out, point it out", referring to the areas where Altantuya were allegedly shot and blown up. Koh explained that both of them were within his sight and hearing all the time that they were at the Puncak Alam crime scene.

The prosecution's 21st witness was Zainudin, aged 52, who went to the Kuala Lumpur police headquarters 2 November 2006 together with four policemen. In the interrogation room, two officers were inside and the process was done over five days with breaks for Azilah to have his meals.

Zainudin said Azilah was handcuffed while he was interrogated. At 4pm on 6 November 2006, Azilah told him that he wanted to "roughly show" the location of the crime scene. Zainudin called ASP Tonny Lunggan to inform him about this and Azilah was taken to the lock-up. 15 minutes later, Zainudin said he saw Koh with Azilah waiting to go to the crime scene.

Zainudin followed the two in a police four-wheel-drive vehicle and sat beside the driver. Koh and Azilah were seated at the back having a conversation. Azilah told the driver to stop at a junction before telling him to turn back. When they arrived at another junction, Zainudin said Koh said something to Azilah but he left the car for a smoke.

When they arrived at the crime scene, Zainudin said Azilah pointed to the locations where Altantuya was shot and later blasted with explosives.

From 7 November 2006 onwards, Zainudin said he interrogated Azilah at the Bukit Aman police headquarters as it was more convenient.

Inspector Koh Denies Police Had Prior Knowledge of Altantuya Murder Location

24 July 2007
Shah Alam

Accused Chief Inspector Azilah Hadri was arrested on 1 November 2006 and detained at the Kuala Lumpur police lockup for six days before he led police to the alleged crime scene where Altantuya was brutally murdered. DSP Zainudin Abdul Samad, who was leading the police investigation team, had interrogated Azilah before the latter was handed over to Chief Inspector Koh Fei Cheow.

Koh was on leave for at least two days before Azilah was handed over to him. He said he met Zainudin at the Kuala Lumpur police headquarters just before they were about to leave with Azilah to the crime scene.

Koh denied that Azilah remained silent at all times he was taken out from the lock-up to the crime scene, but Koh did not caution him that he had the right to remain silent. The defence put it to Koh that Zainudin had told Azilah: "Azilah, I am happy today. You need not say anything. Sirul is already back and we know the crime scene. You just follow the Chinese officer", which Koh denied.

Azilah allegedly replied saying "If you know the place, why take me there." Then Zainudin allegedly told Azilah: "This is an instruction. Don’t show your stubbornness."

Koh also denied that he knew that Zainudin asked Azilah to point out the crime scene when they arrived at an open space on top of a hill in Puncak Alam. He believed that the police had no prior knowledge of the crime scene before Azilah was taken there.

Koh also testified court that he had lodged a police report after visiting the crime scene when he found remains believed to be human bones and burnt marks on some trees.

Ying Ying's mother, Jess Teh Hooi Wen, aged 28, was charged together with Ong for possessing 1.5gm of cannabis at another apartment occupied by Teh and her family at Solok Angsana, Bandar Baru Air Itam, at 6:30pm on July 17 2007. This case has been fixed for mention on 14 September 2007.

Later, Teh and Ong were charged further at the Balik Pulau magistrate’s court. Teh was charged with lodging a false missing persons report about Ying Ying and with consuming methamphetamine. Ong was charged with consuming tetrahydrocannabinol, amphetamine and methamphetamine.

Teh allegedly lodged the report with Lance Corporal Khairun Nisah Abd Shani at the Bayan Lepas police station at 10:30am on 6 July 2007, the day when Ying Ying went missing. The magistrate set bail at RM2,000 in one surety and fixed hearing for 24 September 2007 for Teh.

Teh was also charged with consuming methamphetamine at the Bayan Lepas police station at 1:30am on 9 July 2007. She claimed trial and was allowed bail at RM3,000 pending mention of the case on 24 September 2007. Ong has been jointly charged for the same offence with Teh, and the magistrate set bail at RM3,000, but did not allow him to post it due to the earlier murder charge.

Teh's family did not post her bail, as they feared for her safety from the heated crowded in court.

Azilah Led Police to Crime Scene and Azhar Gave Up Altantuya Jewellery

20 July 2007
Shah Alam

Day 22 of the murder trial of Mongolian Altantuya Shaariibuu continued with the 20th prosecution witness Chief Inspector Koh Fei Cheow, whose police team was led by accused Chief Inspector Azilah Hadri to an area known as Puncak Niaga Subang Lake dam. Koh said Azilah volunteered to bring them there in Puncak Alam at 6:50pm on 6 November 2006.

38-year-old Koh, who has been with the D9 serious crimes division in Kuala Lumpur for ten years, and his team reached a clearing in a forested area near the dam. Azilah then led them to a bushy area which was "the place where the Mongolian woman was blown up". Koh inspected the area and found human skeletal remains and bone fragments. There were also burn marks.

Azilah then led Koh to another area 10 metres away and indicated that that was the place where "the Mongolian woman was shot first". Koh secured the area and contacted Superintendent Zainol Samah, Deputy Superintendent Gan Tack Guan and Assistant Superintendent Tonny Lunggan.

Five minutes later, Tonny Lunggan arrived with his team and accused Corporal Sirul Azhar Umar.

Koh said that although Azilah was handcuffed during interrogation, he did not threaten, coerce or torture Azilah to admit anything.

The defence has questioned the admissibility of Koh's testimony about how Azilah told Koh that he could show the location where Altantuya was murdered and that he showed him the locations where she was blown up and shot.

Justice Mohd Zaki Md Yasin has arranged for time on Monday to hear submissions on whether the trial-within-a-trial should be held.

On 7 November 2006, Koh assisted ASP Zulkarnain Samsudin in interrogating Azhar in his office. Azhar had told them that there was a pair of earrings, a watch and a ring that belonged to Altantuya was in his jacket at his residence. Zulkarnain immediately lodged a police report on this and led a team to Azhar's flat in Kota Damansara, Sungai Buloh.

When the police team arrived at the flat at 4:15pm, there were a few Special Action Squad (UTK) officers outside. Koh met Sergeant Rosli Ibrahim who gave him Azhar's house keys. Koh passed the keys to Zulkarnain.

The team entered the flat and into Azhar's room. Azhar opened a cupboard and handed over a black jacket to Zulkarnain, who then took out the watch and jewellery from a pocket.

Koh identified the items in court, which were the ones that Altantuya's friend Uuriintuya Gal-Ochir had identified before as belonging to Altantuya.

Judge, Lawyers and Accused of Altantuya Trial Visited Crime Scene

19 July 2007
Shah Alam

Superintendent Zainol Samah continued his testimony as the 19th prosecution witness in the murder trial of Altantuya Shaariibuu yesterday. The Kuala Lumpur serious crimes division chief said that Abdul Razak Baginda's private investigator, P. Balasubramaniam, was also arrested in relation to the murder but was later released when investigations showed that he was not involved.

Abdul Razak Baginda is accused of abetting the murder of the 28-year-old Mongolian.

Zainol stated that Chief Inspector Azilah Hadri, Corporal Sirul Azhar Umar, and Azilah’s girlfriend Lance Corporal Rohaniza Roslan were also picked up by the police.

On 6 November 2006, Zainol was in a convoy of five vehicles which were going to Puncak Alam in Shah Alam where Azhar had agreed to take the police to the crime scene. He was in a leading police car with investigating officer ASP Tonny Lunggan ahead of the convoy.

Tonny had called Zainol on his mobile phone after he and ASP Zulkarnain Samsudin had located the place. The officers were accompanied by a forensics team led by Superintendent Amidon Anan. Zainol arrived at the dark crime scene at 7:10pm.

Yesterday, judge Datuk Mohd Zaki Md Yasin, the prosecution and defence teams went to the crime scene at 3:05pm under rainy conditions. The three accused were brought along, but stayed in the police vehicles. The group spent 15 minutes in a forested area on a hill near the Tasik Subang dam. The area is about 20km from the Universiti Teknologi Mara in Puncak Alam, Shah Alam.

Mohd Zaki was briefed by the lawyers on the events that occurred there and explosion experts will be called in as witnesses over the next few days.

Discrepancy in CCTV Recordings and Accused Led Police to Crime Scene

18 July 2007
Shah Alam

On the 20th day of the Altantuya Shaariibuu murder trial, the video tape recordings from Hotel Malaya were played back to the High Court, but left many questions as to the date stamps that were recorded. Three closed-circuit television (CCTV) tapes were surrendered to the police on 10 November 2006, but the first tape showed a date stamp of 11 November. Sergeant Amran Abdul Aziz took the tapes and some bills and telephone records made by Altantuya during her stay there.

Hotel operations manager Jimmy Loo Mow Chan had earlier agreed with counsel Hasnal Rezua Merican, who is representing accused Corporal Sirul Azhar Umar, that the recording dated 11 November would have been made on the same day. He also admitted to counsel Hazman Ahmad, who is representing accused Chief Inspector Azilah Hadri, that the tape that was meant for 18 October also contained recordings made on several other days such as 19 September, 18 and 19 August last year, as the tape had been recycled for previous months' recordings.

Loo then explained that four other staff had access to the CCTV tapes which were under his care. The system would take images from each of the 16 cameras in sequence and the time lapse between two consecutive images from the same camera is about 8 seconds. Three-hour VHS tapes were used to record 24 hours of such images.

Hasnal highlighted that the date of 11 November was written on the tapes that were dated 9 and 18 October with two signatures. Loo suggested that the discrepancy could be due to a "technical fault".

The CCTV surveillance system had been in operation since 2001 and only broke down once in June this year.

Superintendent Zainol Samah took the stand as the prosecution's 19th witness. He is the chief officer of the Kuala Lumpur police contingent's special investigations division and had ordered Assistant Superintendent Zulkarnain Samsudin to arrest Corporal Sirul Azilah on 1 November 2006.

Azilah was taken into police custody at 10:30am. Arresting officer Samsudin then arranged for an identification parade for political analyst's Abdul Razak Baginda's private investigator, P. Balasubramaniam, upon Zainol's order.

Zainol said when he learnt on 2 November 2006 that Azilah had not said anything, he handed Azilah over to the Bukit Aman D6 technical aid and interrogation police unit. Deputy Superintendent Zainudin Abdul Samad carried out the interrogation but Zainol was not updated on its progress.

On 6 November 2006 at 3:30pm, Special Action Force (UTK) deputy chief Mastor Mohd Ariff, together with two UTK operatives, had called on Zainol's office. Zainol was with Deputy Superintendent Gan Tack Guan, an investigating officer of the case, at the time. Mastor introduced Chief Inspector Azilah Hadri to him, saying that he was arrested.

ASP Tonny Lunggan then informed Zainol at 4:15pm that both arrested officers had made a disclosure and agreed to lead a police team to the crime scene at Puncak Alam, where the remains of Mongolian Altantuya were found.

Zainol then arranged for the forensics team, lead by Superintendent Amidon Anan, to meet a police team at a road near Universiti Teknologi Mara at 6:30pm. The police convoy left towards Kuala Selangor, led by Lunggan who was in the same vehicle as Azhar.

Robbers Took Off with RM3.6M Worth of Microchips

18 July 2007
Malacca

Six robbers armed with parangs took RM3.6 million worth of electronic microchips and transmitters from a warehouse in Batu Berendam Industrial Park, Taman Teknologi Cheng yesterday.

The men had entered the warehouse via the back door at 5:30am and shut off electricity from the building. Then, they tied up a lorry driver, co-driver and three security guards on duty. The robbers moved 28 boxes of goods to another lorry.

The driver and co-driver arrived from Kulim, Kedah at 3:30am and were to transport the goods to a factory in the same area. They decided to sleep in the lorry instead of going straight to the factory as the goods were meant to be delivered later that day.

Police indicate that the CCTV recording in the premises were burry as it was dark at the time. No arrests have been made.

CCTV Images Show Two Men were at Hotel Malaya

17 July 2007
Shah Alam

N. Haridharan, aged 22, Hotel Malaya's front office assistant, was doing the night shift on 9 October 2006 when Altantuya Shaariibuu checked in at about 2am and stated that she was leaving the next day.

The 18th prosecution witness said he helped Altantuya to fill in her particulars in the registration form and received RM300 as a deposit. Haridharan gave her the keys to room 817. He knew that Altantuya did not check out the next day but stay on for a few days instead.

Haridharan said Altantuya did not lodge any complaints with him and he could not remember the duty manager on that night.

As the video tapes of the hotel's closed-circuit television cameras could not be viewed in court yesterday, still images from the three tapes showed two men, resembling accused Chief Inspector Azilah Hadri and Corporal Sirul Azhar Umar at the hotel where Altantuya had stayed. They were in casual wear and were at the lobby and on the seventh floor on the evening of 18 October 2006.

Between 4:54pm and 4:55pm that day, a man that appeared to be Azhar wearing a yellow t-shirt and dark pants, was captured by a camera in the hotel lobby browsing through some brochures. Another image showed the second man in a white shirt and dark pants, resembling Azilah, meeting up with Azhar there.

A 4:56pm image showed the men entering a lift and the next shot showed them exiting on the seventh floor. The last image showed the men leaving the hotel at 5pm.

The prosecution told the court that they would get a working video system to playback the tapes today.

CCTV Footage of Hotel Malaya Shown in Altantuya Trial Court

16 July 2007
Shah Alam

In the High Court trial of the murder of Mongolian Altantuya Shaariibuu today, surveillance footage from Hotel Malaya was brought in but had incompatibility problems with the playback system there. 28-year-old Altantuya had stayed in that hotel in October 2006 before she was murdered.

The closed-circuit television (CCTV) footage that was provided by the hotel operations manager Jimmy Loo Mow Chan was screened eventually despite the slight delay in setting up a compatible system.

Last Friday, Loo was the 17th prosecution witness and had said that there were 8 photographs of the CCTV footage dated 18 October 2006, taken by the investigating officers. He also said that there were 20 such CCTV cameras located at the elevator lobbies and stairways.

State CID chief Senior Asst Comm (II) Roslan Ahmad said that while the crime rape in Johor has dropped for the first six months of the year, the number of occurrences of statutory rape has increased by 8% compared to the same period last year. 9 out of 10 rape cases involved underage girls having consensual sex.

SAC Rosland said there are also cases of girls above 18 years old who have had consensual sex but report to the police as having been raped after they got pregnant. He urges parents of girls to work with the police to reduce the numbers as they are mostly consensual.

Sri Kumar of UTK and Jimmy Loo of Hotel Malaya Testify in Altantuya Trial

13 July 2007
Shah Alam

Training officer DSP M.V. Sri Kumar M. Nair, aged 41, told the High Court in the Altantuya Shaariibuu murder trial yesterday the details of basic training and handling of explosives by operatives of the Special Action Squad (UTK). Accused Chief Inspector Azilah Hadri and Corporal Sirul Azhar Umar have undergone basic training in the use of explosives and firearms, but not in advanced explosives and breach training.

Sri Kumar joined UTK in 1987 and has been a trainer for the past six years. The basic explosives training includes taking a small amount of explosives to the field for practical training. Among the explosives operatives use, they are able to use plastic explosives (PE), cutting linear charges (CLC), detonating chords, detonators, sound devices and flash bangs.

The explosives which are retrieved from the store have to have a form filled up with details such as the amount, type and reasons for taking them. Senior officers could ask their officers to collect the explosives on their behalf.

Sri Kumar said that operatives must return the full amount if it is not used, and it is possible for them to take some leftover without being noticed.

Counsel Ahmad Zaidi Zainal, who is appearing for Azhar, questioned Sri Kumar what would happen if CLC was exploded on the ground. He said it would depend on the material of the ground, and in normal cases, a crater would be formed.

Hotel Malaya operations manager Jimmy Loo Mow Chan, aged 50, testified yesterday that tapes recording footage from three closed-circuit television cameras (CCTV) were siezed by police last year on 9, 18, and 19 October. He said Altantuya checked into the hotel on 9 October 2006 and stay in room 817.

The manager of the 41-year-old hotel along Jalan Hang Lekiu said he knew that Altantuya had changed rooms twice but he could not remember when and why.

Sergeant Amran Abdul Aziz came to the hotel and asked Loo for Altantuya's registration form and CCTV recordings.

Then in May, ASP Tonny Lunggan, Supt Amidon Anan and a police photographer, went to Loo's office and asked him to playback the three tapes. Loo played back the tapes and occasionally froze the playback to let the photographer take pictures of the image. Eight shots were taken from the 18 October tape, between 4:54pm and 5pm. Seven shots of these shots were of the hotel lobby, and the last one was of the eight floor lift area. Altantuya stayed on the eighth floor.

Deputy public prosecutor Manoj Kurup then announced that the tapes will be played back in court next Monday.

Five Police Officers Testify as Prosecution Witnesses at Altantuya Trial

12 July 2007
Shah Alam

Constable Azura Azwa Abdul Kadir, aged 24, and Corporal Leena anak Asing, 32, were the next witnesses to testify on the 17th day of the Altantuya Shaariibuu murder trial yesterday. The policewomen are attached to the Petaling Jaya anti-vice, gaming and secret society division (D7) and colleagues of Lance Corporal Rohaniza Roslan, the prosecution witness who is facing allegations of committing perjury and was the girlfriend of first accused Chief Inspector Azilah Hadri.

Roslan testified last week that Azilah had told her that he did not know what had happened to Altantuya. Roslan then went to check with the Jalan Travers and Brickfields police stations for any recent reports of rape or abduction lodged by foreigners between 19 and 20 October 2006.

Azura said she was on duty on 31 October 2006 when Roslan asked her which police station was busier and she replied "Brickfields".

Leena was on duty on the same day and she overhead Roslan making a call to the Brickfields station at 2:30pm. Roslan was heard asking if there was any report lodged on a missing person, sudden death or discovery of a body in the Brickfields area.

The 14th prosecution witness, arresting officer Deputy Superintendent Lim Meng Seah, told the court that Abdul Razak Baginda's staff served his team of seven officers drinks and refreshments when they went to his office to arrest him on 7 November 2006 at 9:55am. They seized two mobile phones from him and the visitor registration book in the building lobby that day.

They were also served refreshments two days later at the Malaysian Strategic Research Centre office in the Lembaga Getah Asli Malaysia building along Jalan Ampang, Kuala Lumpur, when they seized Abdul Razak's laptop and five sheets of paper. Lim could not recall the contents of the papers, but they were kept in a Hotel Malaya envelope.

Lim denied that his team from the D9 serious crimes division were served food when they went to Abdul Razak's Damasara Heights house on 9 November 2007, as put forth by Abdul Razak's counsel Wong Kian Kheong. They went there to retrieve a second laptop and Abdul Razak's international passport. The laptop could not be found.

He said Abdul Razak did not resist arrest and cooperated fully with the authorities.

Abdul Razak’s wife Mazlinda Makhzan surrendered the second laptop to Lim at 11pm on the same day. Lim handed all the seized items to Asst Comm Tonny Lunggan, another investigating officer.

DSP M.V. Sri Kumar, aged 41, said that throughout his service, he had never instructed Azilah to perform detonations because Azilah did not have any specialised training on handling explosives. Testifying as the 15th prosecution witness, he also said that Azhar was not trained in advanced explosives as well.

Sri Kumar explained that each operative had to record the amount of explosives taken out from the armoury and the remaining amount, if any, returned. He said he was sure that there was no missing explosives during training and operations under him, but he could not say the same for those under superior officers.

Constable Fatimah Abd Wahap, aged 30, of the Special Action Force (UTK) was the next witness in the High Court to stand trial. She confirmed that accused Corporal Sirul Azhar Umar had been issued a Heckler & Koch MP5 submachine gun and 60 bullets for 26 days from 4 October last year. Two empty magazines were also issued to him.

The corporal had produced a letter of approval signed by a senior officer and stated that it was for a "special assignment". Fatimah could not recall the officer who signed it.

Azhar returned the gun on 30 October 2006, ten days after Altantuya had gone missing. Fatimah counted every bullet in the presence of Azhar when he returned all of them at the UTK armoury. She did admit that she was "being careless" for not recording in the entry book the number of bullets that Azhar had taken out and returned.

Fatimah admitted that there were many entries in the book which did not record the number of bullets and magazines that operatives took out and back. She said she was also not aware that the bullets were coded green colour for training purposes and red colour for actual missions.
