Rioting Men at Temple Arrested

2 February 2007
Johor Baru

Twenty men at the Sri Muniswarar temple in Tampoi were arrested and charged with rioting, causing hurt to a government officer, causing damage to a patrol car and obstruction of government service. They were among the 2,000 to 3,000 people at the temple early yesterday morning.

Police had arrived at the temple after receiving reports of people obstructing traffic at the temple. When Johor Baru (South) traffic chief Deputy Supt Ooi Kok Siong got out of his patrol car to control traffic, the group of men three stones, beer bottles and helmets at him and his colleagues. One of the stones hit his left shin and had to be stitched.

The men, aged between 17 and 25 years old, were making noise and performing illegal motorcycle stunts outside the temple. Federal Reserve Unit officers later arrived and arrested them.

Police say that these men were intoxicated and came from Ulu Tiram, Taman Daya, Pasir Gudang, Masai and Skudai.
